{NRE} Creating a local server to test web based applications

ive been having some trouble figuring out how to test web services without my own server. jordan and i are gonna try to collect information on this and share it with all dudes. WAMP LAMP MAMP loll

easy php was the one that my php, sql, javascript book was recommending. ima give it a try i guess

I run a LAMP stack right hurr on my laptop, the very one from which I am posting. It's not ideal as a dev platform, but it sure works in a pinch and it lets me dick around with diferent webservers (Apache and Nginx are the two I've tried) without too much heartache. Can't do likewise with a WAMP stack on your (presumably) windows box?

If you're in need of a testing/dev Linux based environment, how do you feel about making an Amazon EC2 account? The bottom tier is free, and if you end up pushing to production all you have to do is bump up your account to a level of service suitable to the needs of your app. No serious pants migration required!

For my part, I pay Linode for a VPS in their cloud. EC2 is free, but Linode offers a 64-bit Gentoo image for my pleasure and personal delight, so they get my 20 bucks. I like the idea of dealing with Not Amazon, too.

after setting up this post forever ago i now use a WAMP server with a filezilla server for ftp on an old tablet pc. it was nice for testing net services for a game i was developing. awesome replacement for dropbox
